The Personal Side of Business


Like many companies, the Christmas season is a big deal for our organization. Millions of people have recordings of family members doing things like telling their life story, singing, conversing, playing the piano, the list goes on. And every November we start receiving phone calls from people around the country who want to digitize tapes to give as gifts.

The time leading up to the holidays is a time of great reflection for many people. More often than not, when a potential customer calls to talk about sending their tapes, they tell us the story behind the recordings. We answer the phone, and after a brief introduction they begin a sentence with something like, “I have some really old tapes that are important to me, they are recordings of…”

I have personally heard hundreds of stories from parents and children talking about significant memories, proud moments, and touching events. I have heard about glory days, younger years and fond memories loved ones who have passed away. Most people who call take the time to explain what is on the tapes and why they are so significant to them. We don’t solicit this information, but people seem to want us to understand just how important and priceless their recordings are.

Those phone calls are a gentle reminder that what we do in our studio matters deeply to those we serve. This is more than a business, we literally help connect the past to the future.

Every once in a while someone takes the time to reach out to us after the fact. This weekend I received such an email.

I would like to thank you so very much for the wonderful job you did, converting my old cassettes to CD. They turned out better than I could have ever hoped! On Christmas Day, my family was able to hear my grandfather, a vaudeville Irish Tenor, sing a selection of songs, including “Oh, Holy Night”. We were all so moved to hear his voice again, as we have been missing him since he passed away in 1994. Thank you very much again.

As the new year begins I am caught up in marketing, sales plans, taxes, upgrading equipment, etc., so it’s refreshing to stop and think that my little company made that moment possible for that family.
